Perhaps someone needs to write a guide for the correct conduct when posting tweets. We’ve heard about netiquette. What about Twittiquette? Twitter and other social media are powerful tools for spreading your voice and connecting with folks around the world.

But, in certain circumstances, “think before your tweet.” Not everything that crosses your mind is appropriate for the microblog. Especially for professionals, it can put your credibility on the line.

For example, take the case of Ketchum public relations VP James Andrews. Andrews was visiting Memphis, headquarters of FedEx, a Ketchum client. Andrews used his Twitter account to insult Memphis. He wrote,”True confession but I’m in one of those towns where I scratch my head and say ‘I would die if I had to live here!'”

It was blogger Peter Shankman who stumbled across the tweet, and you can only imagine what happened from there, thanks to the power of the blogosphere. According to reports, “the tweet was copied to FedEx’s marketing management, and a predictable round of corporate apologizing followed.”

Oops!

A reminder to be careful what you post.
